I’ve always had a passion for creativity. I guess I can consider myself one of the lucky ones, finding true enjoyment from what I do for a living. Constantly solving new and challenging problems through design keeps me mentally stimulated and driven, and will continue to do so for years to come.
For the past 8 years I’ve been in employment at a local agency as a Senior Designer, working on projects with market leading clients you’ll probably know, as well as smaller clients you perhaps might not. It was here I developed my creative and digital skillset that can only be earned in practice, which has enabled me to take a holistic view to managing and delivering projects.
One of the main benefits of working for a small agency is how hands on and adaptable you need to be. It’s from this I think the term ‘designer’ for both myself and others alike has become somewhat diluted and misinterpreted, as the creative industry now spans across so many disciplines. I personally refer to myself as a ‘creative’, as it gives more justice and scope to what’s actually involved.
The thought of setting up something of my own developed over time from a simple idea into a long-term goal. The prospect of stepping away from someone else’s vision and building something I can truly invest in was equally as exciting as it was daunting. The name ‘Up North’ came early and naturally. I’m born and raised in Yorkshire (God’s own country), considered to have quite a strong northern accent and love northing more than being in the countryside. I’m proud of my northern roots and wanted to embrace that in a simple and clear way.
The concept and potential of Up North developed and matured to the point where it demanded the commitment and discipline it deserved in order to become a reality. Building a reputation of hard graft and quality design would not come overnight, but if everything that Up North creates is done to the very highest standard, from a piece of design to a simple line of copy, then surely its reputation will grow naturally over time.
On the 6th July 2020 Up North officially launched. Driven by pure determination, passion and ambition, creative outputs began leaving the studio with meticulous attention to detail.
Up North presents an opportunity for a fresh start, for new ideas to be explored and new relationships to be formed. Whether in the studio or working remotely, Up North will endeavour to inspire and will continue to be inspired by everything around us. Visit the about page to learn more about Up North.
